The Forensic Science Program has been serving students throughout the United States since 1999. We are dedicated to providing a substantial undergraduate education with an emphasis in the careers accessible with an undergraduate degree, particularly DNA analyst and trace evidence analyst. In addition we serve those interested in having a solid science background as part of a law enforcement career, possibly as a crime scene technician. Our program is closely associated to the strong Criminal Justice program at UND. We encourage anyone who is curious about science or forensic science and does not know yet know which science will be his or her career to consider this major.
Program Strengths
- A forensic teaching laboratory, not an academic laboratory. Our students are grounded in the culture of the forensic laboratory, especially in the areas of security, chain of custody, and forensic report writing.
- A program director who is connected to the forensic community as an active Fellow in the American Academy of Forensic Sciences.
- A cohort of students who annually attend the American Academy of Forensic Sciences annual meeting. This travel is supported by their fundraising activity and alumni support.
- Community engagement through fundraising activities and community service by the Forensic Science Club. Our students offer the "Haunted Lab", one of the few haunted experiences available during Halloween in the area. They also perform science outreach in conjunction with the Dakota Science Center's Science Day each April.
Interested in supporting the Forensic Science Program?
Whether you are a graduate, a forensic science specialist, or an interested citizen, there are numerous ways to support the forensic science program! Opportunities exist in the near future and for years to come. Consider a few of the possibilities below:
Everyone
- Donate Your Body – Does your skeleton have a story? We tell that story through the Anthropological Deeded Body Program. Make a lasting legacy by donating your skeleton to science. View our FAQ brochure for information on how to contribute.
- Make a Monetary Donation – Your funds create scholarships, support student travel to the annual American Academy of Forensic Sciences meeting, support students who participate in public learning fairs, and provide access to current technology and databases relevant to budding forensic scientists.
- Donate Equipment – Certain used laboratory equipment such as microscopes; Old 10 gal fish tanks make great fuming chambers, even when cracked; gun enthusiasts generate useful spent cartridge collections and firearms components (no live ammunition or working firearms please); many items are useful, just ask.
