This one-of-a-kind program uniquely blends the fields of sports psychology, health psychology, and counseling—providing the only master’s program in the nation that offers a dual counseling and sport psychology credential. Sport psychology and health psychology share many synergies, such as the need to manage behaviors that conflict with social, environmental, and physiological challenges. Our program focuses on these synergies as we provide a comprehensive foundation in counseling methods related to maximizing health and performance.
Eating disorders, ethical compromises, steroid and substance abuse problems, elitism, and exceedingly high expectations are all issues that negatively affect health and well-being. Our program trains counselors with the skills to address them in a variety of ways—such as through obesity prevention and treatment, exercise promotion and adherence, disease prevention, athlete performance enhancement, and more. We address issues such as the development of sport and wellness programs for populations that are underserved and often marginalized, and ways in which professionals working with adult athletes can enhance performance and character in constructive and healthy ways.
We provide an immersive learning experience with a diverse faculty. Professors are practicing clinicians as well as scholars, researchers, and leaders in the field of sport and health psychology. Learning takes place in small, intimate classes, and through the exceptional training opportunities we offer. Students engage in faculty research, create presentations for professional conferences, and assist with academic milestones such as co-authoring textbook chapters and journal articles.
Through strong faculty support, individualized advising, a dedicated Training Department, and the University’s partnerships with hundreds of community agencies, our counseling students gain valuable practicum and clinical experience—and have benefitted from our 100% placement rate in clinical and sport/health practicum sites.
A comprehensive theoretical curriculum and supervised clinical field experiences prepare students for success taking the Counselor Preparation Comprehensive Examination (CPCE): On the most recent exam, our students achieved an impressive 100% passing rate.
